Rehearsal Update

Hi WASWE members

A couple of changes were made to the schedule for the next few weeks.

1. Next weeks’ rehearsal (28th June) is cancelled. Our directors are unable to attend, as are a number of members of Swing Band so it would not be viable to do this instead.

2. The next rehearsal will be on Monday 12th July for Concert Band.

Musicians Wanted!

The West Australian Symphonic Wind Ensemble is looking for a few good musicians. Positions are open for percussion, trumpet, trombone, clarinet, french horn, oboe, and more. Rehearsals are Monday nights, 7:30-9:30. Please contact Kate Hodgkin for more information.

WASWE has two performances coming up in March.

Saturday, 13 March, 7:30pm — The WA Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Swing Band will team up with The Urban Cowboy Band for Hot Cross Rock — a fusion of symphonic rhythm and blues at the Maylands Peninsula Golf Course. The concert is sponsored by the City of Bayswater and is free to all.

Sunday, 28 March, approx 10am — WASWE Swing Band will perform at the City of Bayswater’s Autumn River Festival, a family fun day featuring live music, plenty of kids activities, and food, craft and community stalls. Free.

Rehearsals and Australia Day

Just a reminder that rehearsals begin again on Monday, 18 January 2010. We will be playing for the City of Bayswater’s Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony on 26 January, and there will only be two rehearsals before that date so attendance is greatly appreciated.

Two concerts are coming up soon! The first is a special seniors event, and the second is our regular holiday season concert. Please check back for more details closer to the time.

Sunday, 1st November 2009, 2:00pm-4:00pm – Seniors Concert, Les Hansman Community Centre, 246 Walter Road, Morley, Western Australia.

Saturday, 28th November 2009, 7:30pm-10:00pm – WA Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Swing Band Concert (wine and cheese night) – Morley Sport and Recreation Centre, Wellington Road, Morley, Western Australia. Tickets $10 full, $6 concession, available at the door.

Call for Lower Brass and Percussion

The West Australian Symphonic Wind Ensemble is looking for a few good players. If you play percussion or lower brass, are 17 or older, and would like a chance to be part of this respected community ensemble, please email Kate Hodgkin or Ross Brennan. WASWE rehearses on Monday nights from 7:30-9:30 at the Morley Sport and Recreation Centre and performs at several concerts and community events each year.

Conductor News — Welcome Back Ross, Thank You Alan!

WASWE would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to Alan Lourens, conductor for last season.

For the forthcoming season we are pleased to welcome back Ross Brennan as conductor.

Ross commenced his music education at the age of 11, studying clarinet at Hillcrest Primary. He continued through yrs 8 -12 at John Forrest SHS where he was awarded the Music prize in 1976.

Ross received a Diploma of Teaching (Music) and a Bachelor of Education (Music) from Edith Cowan University WA. Since graduating he has taught in city and country schools for the Education Department of Western Australia. As a performer he has participated in the WA Government Schools Concert Band tour of London, Vienna and Switzerland (ISME) 1976, the WA Youth Concert Band and the WA Symphonic Wind Ensemble. As a director he has toured to Albany, Geraldton, Esperance, Singapore and Sydney with school bands, orchestras and ensembles. He has been Director of Music at Carine SHS since 1994 and is now the Head of the Arts. As well as his administrative and teaching responsibilities, Ross conducts the senior concert band and orchestra.

Ross has been involved with the Western Australian Symphonic Wind Ensemble for over ten years performing on clarinet, saxophone and percussion. This is his fifth season as conductor of the band.
